Simeon Turner & Turner Pipes
My good friend is an accomplished tobacco pipe maker and owner of Turner Pipes. This year he has been working diligently to build up his stock of pipes for sale in preparation for launching his website. So, over the last several months, we have been photographing his pipes and collaborating on his website design. This week, we shot some portraits for use on the site. As a pipe smoker myself, I have enjoyed partnering with Simeon and his wife and long-time friend of mine, DJ on this project. And as a Turner Pipe owner, I can testify that his pipes are beautiful and well-crafted. If you or someone you cherish is in the market for a new tobacco pipe, I highly recommend them.
The Unsinkable Leslie Brown
I met Leslie at a recent wedding I was helping shoot. Her hair first caught my eye as you don’t see as many pink-frosted-nearly-mohawks as you used to. We got to talking about tattoos at the reception and I thought it would be cool to put a shoot together with her. My wife and stylist agreed when she saw the photo I took of Leslie at the reception. So we got together for lunch to get to know each other a little better and discuss ideas for a photo shoot. Leslie, among other things, is a piano teacher (out of Swallow Hill Music) and member of the band, Input – a hip-hop band based in Denver. I hope to get out and photograph the band at some point as well. I think Polly and I are going to have a blast concepting a shoot with Leslie – more to come on that. For now, here are some photos I snapped at lunch.
Beckett Masters
This week I had the opportunity to shoot Beckett Masters’ 1-Year old Portraits. I haven’t seen such a “smiley” child in a while – which dad attributes to mom’s personality and mom attributes to dad’s demeanor. The parents are long-time friends of ours and it was a real honor to be asked to shoot these very special photos. To think that, in some way, these will help preserve the memory of this moment in Beckett’s life makes my passion for photography especially meaningful and wonderful. I imagine that some day, Beckett will pull out these photos to compare them to the likeness of his own children – as we have done so many times with our own childhood photos.
We decided to shoot Beckett at Wash Park in the late afternoon to capture some of Beckett’s most playful hours, as well as some of Denver’s most beautiful summer hours. My wife, Polly, and the kids came along and we enjoyed a picnic dinner with the Masters prior to our shoot. Thanks Brian, Ali and Beckett for the great time at Wash Park. Hope you enjoy the photos.
Lisa Langas: Golf Retail Consultant
Today I had the opportunity to shoot new promotional photos for Lisa Langas. She’s family, but also a strategic business woman and entrepreneur. After being styled by Polly, we headed out to the Lone Tree Golf Club for a quick portrait session. Lisa is casual and spirited. We had a great time. Thanks Lisa for allowing me to be a part of your family and enterprise.
The Kamstras Celebrate 9 Years
Last night, we had the chance to celebrate with our long-time friends, Dave and Shelley Kamstra. Over the years, we have tried to hang out with them in downtown Denver on or near their anniversary. We like to try new restaurants, wander the city, laugh and generally have a great time. Shelley loves to take pictures as well, so I thought I would bring some gear along and shoot some photos for their anniversary and give us an opportunity to talk about how I get some of the shots I get. So after dinner at Sullivan’s, we wandered over to one of my favorite spots and shot some photos. It was a blast – both the shooting and the drunken crazies that kept coming over wanting to know what was going on. Happy anniversary Kamstras! We love you and are so glad we could celebrate with you again.
Elizabeth Suárez
I’ve been working with Elizabeth Suárez and Kimba Langas on a re-branding and relaunching campaign over the last month. Elizabeth is a corporate consultant who specializes in “Empowering individuals and teams with essential tools to produce measurable results”. Kimba (my sister-in-law and award-winning video producer) is producing a new line of DVDs with Elizabeth targeted at organizations and companies with need for staff and team development. In addition to the DVD series, we are re-designing Elizabeth’s brand, website (not yet updated), and promotional materials. As a starting point, we shot some new promotional portraits in Denver’s Santa Fe Arts District. We wanted something fresh, vibrant and professional. We hired Polly for styling and collaborated on wardrobe. Elizabeth is a blast to work with – funny and full of life and energy. Thanks to Elizabeth, Kimba, Polly and Andrea and Michael of Studio 6 Coffee House for making this such a fun shoot.
The Langas Girls
I was asked to shoot some portraits for some family members – The Langas Girls. They are a gift for their dad for Father’s Day. I chose Daniels Park (just south of Highlands Ranch) for our shooting location. Polly was hired as well for styling. I shot mostly available light, but used the strobes for a few shots (of course). The girls were fantastic – good-spirited and very natural in front of the camera. It was a fun shoot and we got a wide range of fun material. Here are a few shots from the day:
